DJ Durkin was hired as the head football coach at the University of Maryland in December 2015. In August 2018, Jordan McNair, a 19-year-old offensive lineman, collapsed during a team workout due to heatstroke and later died. An investigation revealed that McNair’s death was preventable and that the coaching staff failed to properly diagnose and treat his condition.
In the aftermath of McNair’s death, an external investigation was launched into the football program’s culture and coaching practices. The report found a toxic culture of intimidation, fear, and belittlement within the program, and revealed instances of physical and emotional abuse of players by the coaching staff.
On October 30, 2018, DJ Durkin was reinstated as head coach after a two-month suspension. This decision was met with widespread criticism and backlash from the public, including Maryland students, alumni, and football players. Two days later, the university’s Board of Regents reversed its decision and fired Durkin.
The firing came after immense pressure from Maryland students and alumni, who staged protests and called for Durkin’s removal. It also came after national criticism of the university’s handling of the investigation and the decision to reinstate Durkin.
The firing of DJ Durkin marked the end of a tumultuous period for the University of Maryland football program. The university pledged to make significant changes to the program’s culture and practices in order to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
